Apple Pie Filling (Instant Pot or Stovetop)

There’s no doubt that homemade apple pie is a delicious dessert, but it’s pretty high in points.

I checked the WW app and one slice of regular apple pie ranged from 13 to 17 points!

Instead of making the whole apple pie, I decided to make the filling. This apple pie filling is delicious and 0 points per serving.

The Best Apples to Use:

While you certainly have the freedom to use any apple variety, some apples truly shine when subjected to heat, maintaining their integrity and imparting the most incredible flavor.

Granny Smith apples are usually my go-to. This apple variety is beloved for its distinct tartness, creating a delightful balance with the sweetness of the added sugar.

If you’re in the mood to explore, Honeycrisp, Braeburn, and Golden Delicious apples also put up a commendable performance.

These apple varieties are also known for their ability to hold their shape well when cooked, all while delivering an enchanting flavor profile that harmonizes beautifully with the rest of the ingredients.

Today, I had Honeycrisp apples on hand. It was my first time making an apple dessert with them, which turned out delicious.

How to Make Apple Pie Filling (Instant Pot):

Begin by peeling, coring, and dicing the apples into large bite-size pieces. They will cook down some in the Instant Pot so you don’t want to cut them too small.

Add the apples to the bottom of a 6 quart Instant Pot, then pour the water in.

Stir in the cinnamon and granulated Splenda. Place the lid on the Instant Pot and lock it. Make sure the lever is set to seal.

I cooked my apples on high for 2 minutes, then did a quick release.

In a small bowl, add 1 teaspoon of cornstarch with 2 tablespoons of water. Mix together, then add it to the apples while stirring.

Continue to stir until the liquid thickens.

Let the apple pie filling cool slightly before serving. I poured mine into a ramekin and topped it with some fat-free whipped cream. It was delicious!

How to Make on the Stovetop:

Once you have peeled, cored, and diced the apples, add them to a saucepan. Pour the water into the saucepan, then stir in the cinnamon and granulated Splenda.

Bring to a simmer and cook for 5 minutes.

In a small bowl, add 1 teaspoon of cornstarch with 2 tablespoons of water. Mix together, then add it to the apples while stirring.

Continue to stir until the liquid thickens. Let the apple pie filling cool slightly before serving.

Tips and Tricks:

The level of sweetness can vary from apple to apple. Taste your apple pie filling once it’s cooked, if necessary add more sweetener.

Be gentle with the apples when you stir them, I used a rubber spatula.

If you don’t want to eat the apple pie filling on its own, it makes a great topping for pancakes or waffles.

Storing this dessert is just as easy as making it. Simply transfer any remaining filling into an airtight container and pop it into your refrigerator.
