Patty Melt
Who doesn’t love a patty melt!? Well, probably vegetarians. Other than that, who??
There’s a burger patty, melted cheese and sautéed onions. YUM!
When I was a kid I thought that a patty melt was created by someone named Patty. It wasn’t until later in life that it clicked. It’s a burger patty!! 🙂

Ordering a patty melt from a restaurant is especially delicious. Probably because they use oodles of butter. I can remember the grease dripping down my hands as I ate it.
Obviously that isn’t a very healthy meal. Especially with a side of fries. But like most things, it can be lightened up and Weight Watchers friendly.
The Ingredients
Bread: To help keep it light I used Sara Lee 45 calorie whole wheat honey bread. I like it and it is only 1 point per slice.
Ground Beef: I used ground sirloin which is 0 points with the current plan. It’s a great source of protein. ,
Cheese: I like using Sargento ultra thin cheese, it’s only 2 points for one slice. It’s a thin slice of cheese but it’s enough to give you that melted cheese you need in a patty melt.
A patty melt typically has Swiss cheese, but I only had cheddar. It was still delicious!
Worcestershire Sauce: A couple of splashes will give the ground beef a lot of flavor.
Onion: You can’t have a patty melt without sauteed onion!
I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter (spray): This helps to “fry” the bread without a bunch of points.
Seasonings: I used garlic powder, salt, and pepper to season the ground beef.
How to Make a Weight Watchers Friendly Patty Melt
Start by slicing the onions and breaking them apart. Spray a frying pan with I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter and add the onion.
Let the onions cook on medium-low for 20 minutes, or until they’re nice and golden.
Add a couple of splashes to the ground sirloin and form it into a patty. Season it with garlic powder, salt, and pepper.
Cook the patty in a frying pan over medium heat. I cooked mine 5 minutes on each side so that it was medium.
Remove the patty from the pan and cover it with foil.
Spray one side of each slice of bread with I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter Spray. To the other side add the slice of cheese, hamburger patty and sauteed onions.
Cook in a clean frying pan for 2-3 minutes on each side, or until the bread is golden brown.
With the current Weight Watchers plan (5/15/25) this Patty Melt is only 4 points!
It’s low in points and it’s a very filling meal. Fries or chips used to be my side with this sandwich, but instead I went with carrot sticks. I still got the crunch I wanted without all of the points.
