Filet-O-Fish Made Easy at Home (Copycat Recipe)

Who doesn’t love a classic McDonald’s Filet-O-Fish?

It’s a delightful combination of crispy fish, tangy tartar sauce, and melty cheese, all wrapped in a soft bun.

A traditional Filet-O-Fish from McDonald’s will set you back 13 points, but fear not! With my easy McDonald’s copycat recipe, you can enjoy the same delicious flavors at home for only 6 points.

The secret to a successful recreation lies in choosing ingredients that mimic the original’s textures and flavors while keeping the point count low.

The Ingredients

Buns: I chose Aunt Millie’s Live Carb Smart buns because they’re only 1 point each.

They have the same soft, fluffy texture that complements the crispy fish patty perfectly.

This swap significantly reduces the overall point count without sacrificing the classic taste and feel you expect from a Filet-O-Fish sandwich.

Fish: To keep this recipe easy I bought fish fillets that were already made.

I bought Van de Kamp’s beer batter fish fillets. I used one which was 4 points.

The box had instructions for the air fryer so that’s how I made mine. The fish was crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. I was pleasantly surprised!

Cheese: McDonald’s uses a 1/2 slice of American cheese.

To save points I used a 1/2 slice of fat free American cheese. It added 0 points to the sandwich.

Tartar Sauce: I made my own tartar sauce to keep the points low.

I used a combination of light mayonnaise, dill pickle relish, dried dill, lemon juice, a pinch of black pepper and a pinch of salt.

It’s easy to make and tastes delicious.

How to Make a Filet-O-Fish Sandwich

Start by getting the tartar sauce ready. This will give it time to have the flavors meld together.

Add the light mayonnaise, dill pickle relish, dried dill, lemon juice, salt, and black pepper to a small bowl. Mix together, cover, and refrigerate while you get the fish ready.

Place the fish fillets in the bottom of an air fryer. Cook at 400 degrees F. for 12-14 minutes, flipping halfway through.

Open the buns and add 1/2 slice of fat-free American cheese to the bottom bun.

Once the fish is done cooking place one filet on each bun.

Spread one tablespoon of tartar sauce over the top bun and place the bun on the fish.

Serve the sandwich immediately after assembling to ensure the fish remains crispy and the cheese perfectly melted.

Serving Suggestions

For added flair, consider incorporating extra toppings like a fresh lettuce leaf or a slice of ripe tomato.

Serve with a side of baked French fries or baked potato chips. They’re lower in points and a great addition to the Filet-O-Fish sandwich.

A crisp side salad or roasted vegetables are also a great low point addition. Fresh vegetables like carrots or celery are also a great option.
